Ellen Michaelson, MD, MFA

Physician

Dr. Ellen Michaelson grew up in New England. She graduated from Brandeis University and earned her MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and her MFA from Pacific University

Dr. Michaelson has been practicing in NW Portland since 2008 in her solo practice at HealthMax Primary Care. She did her training in Internal Medicine and Hematology in New York City. She worked at Harlem Hospital on faculty at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. A founding member of the Ethics Committee at Harlem, she made a video of end-of-life care. Dr. Michaelson was an NEH Fellow in Medical Humanities, and did advanced work at the Narrative Medicine Workshop at Columbia University. In Portland, she is the vice president of the board at the NW Narrative Medicine Collaborative. 

In Oregon, Dr. Michaelson spent a year in rural practice in the Dalles before moving to Portland. She joined the faculty at OHSU where she saw patients, taught, and was Director of the Anticoagulation Clinic. She continues on faculty as Assistant Professor of Medicine.

Her debut novel, The Care of Strangers, winner of the 2019 Miami Book Fair/de Groot Prize, was published by Melville House in November 2020. Her work has appeared in Creative Nonfiction, Portland Monthly, Literature and Medicine, and Women in Solitude (SUNY Press). For more details, please see ellenmichaelson.com. Erica Sandoval, MA

Medical Assistant

Erica has 10 years of front office experience and her valuable time as a medical assistant provides her with additional insight into patients needs.

Erica enjoys spending time with her family and kids, playing soccer, and going on walks. She loves helping others and it brings her joy making and seeing those around her happy.
